What is Zobo?
Zobo is a drink made from zobo leaves, the name was given in Nigerian also known in West Africa as Zobo. The name of the drink changes from culture to culture and from country to country. Zobo is a Nigerian traditional drink and is also drunk internationally.
The drink is commonly sold in the market or in restaurants while the leaves are sold mostly in the market. This drink is also commonly made in the homes of Nigerians because people take it a lot with their meals, it is used in serving house visitors, also used in serving guests at weddings, birthday parties, etc.
It is enjoyable because it refreshes the body and is also a good source of digestion, it can be consumed hot, warm or cold. In parties it is advisable that you serve it cold, this is a natural drink known for its tastiness and such richness in color.
Zobo drink comes in the color of either light red or dark red depending on how long you allow it to cook. This drink can also be served with all kinds of food and snacks, and its one of the easiest homemade drinks to make as a family or by yourself. How zobo is grown? Zobo leaf ( hibiscus plant) is grown in both tropical and subtropical regions, it is grown in many different parts of the world.
Health benefits of Zobo
This Roselle leaf which is the zobo leaf comes from the hibiscus sabdariffa plant and it has a lot of health benefits. Zobo helps you to gain your appetite, if you lost your appetite, it helps gain your appetite because it has a lot of iron and niacin in it. Zobo is also used to prevent cancer because it has antioxidant which helps in straightening the system, your immune system, in particular, it also wages war with free-radical contamination.
Zobo also helps in curing cold and fever, it is advisable you drink it hot or warm for this case. Zobo helps the kidney to filter its waste products eg urine and oxalic acid. Zobo is very nutritional it contains a lot of vitamin C, tartaric acid, delphinium, citric acid, and anti-bacterial properties the list goes on.
One of the ingredients in Zobo is ginger, know that this is an optional ingredient. Ginger has a powerful taste and flavor, it is very medicinal in a traditional or international perspective. It is good for cancer patients and pregnant women (during morning sickness), it helps reduce vomiting. Ginger is commonly known for its hotness and flavor it gives to Zobo. Other ingredients for zobo include water, pineapple, flavor (extracts), sugar, most important Zobo leaves. Note the Zobo Leafs you get must be the dried one.
The process of making Zobo
Pour some water into a pot, add some Zobo leaves into the pot. Then you slice and add some gingers flesh or dry into the pot, ginger is optional for those that don't take ginger. Cook for 20 mins to 30 minutes make sure it's boiling and popping before you remove it from the gas and allow to cool.
Sieve to remove the ingredients (most preferred use a clean cloth for best results), pour into a bowl by now you should have pure liquid, particles free. Then you add some flavor of your choice e.g vanilla, pineapple extracts, add ground sugar to taste then stir. Serve in bottles, cups or jars, etc.
You can also avoid the use of sugar to prevent cholesterol. In place of sugar, you can use sweetening, low cholesterol sugar, or ripe pineapple. You cook your ripe pineapple together with your Zobo for its sweetness. Zobo can be taken alone without any form of sugar or sweetening
